Looking back on 2016, it would be all too easy to pick our award for Advertising Agency of the Year as last year’s proudest S3 moment.
But it’s actually the success and growth of The S3 Academy that stands out above everything else as the highlight of 2016. After all, we’re about putting PEOPLE FIRST and, as such, there is no better example of our commitment to people than the academy. Making coffee, shredding paper and twiddling thumbs, our academy is not.
Rather, interns are given a brief to work on, pitching to S3’s CEO and other senior staff members at the end of the two-week programme. The fortnight also allows interns to experience a taste of what to expect from the fast pace of agency life.
With over 200 years’ collective industry experience, S3’s award-winning experts act as mentors for interns, providing them with all the right skills and knowledge that will help them succeed in the highly competitive industry of advertising.
And, by forging relationships with and working alongside establishments such as the University of South Wales, The S3 Academy complements students’ curriculum, providing Welsh creative talent with a platform to grow.
What we’re really proud of, however, is the fact that The S3 Academy is providing full-time jobs for talented individuals, strengthening the Welsh economy as a result. Last year alone saw 28 interns at The S3 Academy, with a total of five jobs offered to academy graduates since its inception.
“Our plan has always been to secure the most talented people from the industry and attract the highest calibre of candidates, whether they are just starting out or already gained valuable years of experience. As the business continues to grow and we go from strength to strength we hope to open up more opportunities for young people looking to gain skills, experience and a foot on the ladder of their chosen career path.”
– Matt Jones / CEO, S3 Advertising
By finding and offering job opportunities to the industry’s most promising talent, S3 are not only increasing employment levels within the Welsh creative industry, but also ensuring that this talent remains in Wales.
The importance of the Welsh economy and creative industry benefiting from this talent is echoed by the USW’s Advertising Design course leader, Lee Thomas, who said:
“A knock-on effect of working with The S3 Academy is that our graduating students have a new mind-set that they do not have to move to London to gain employment within the industry. With such high profile brands as the BBC and Sky TV investing resources into South Wales, especially the city of Cardiff, we are very lucky to have such supportive partners as The S3 Academy.”

As courses such as the USW’s continue to attract talented individuals, our commitment to providing a home to nurture that talent will only grow stronger.
And we can’t wait to see what kind of talent this year’s academy interns have to offer.
