What do you get when you cross one of the greatest football teams to have ever played the game, an iconic sports brand and an airport?
One of the best sports ads of all time, that’s what. When Nike teamed up with the 1998 Brazilian team before the World Cup in France, they created THE seminal football ad of a generation.
Under the direction of John Woo with creative from John Boiler and Glenn Cole, it had everything you could ever want from a TV spot: seriously catchy music, humour and flair. It’s a simple recipe for success, one that is all too often overlooked in today’s advertising landscape.
No CGI, just the ultimate showcase of human skill. And a cameo from Eric Cantona, which, as a Manchester United fan, was just the icing on the cake. But what I love most about this ad is the fact that it’s inspirational. To this very day, I can’t help but watch it with a smile on my face and feel inspired to go out and play footie.
And, to my knowledge, there’s no more potent call to action than inspiration.
