If you’re in serious need of some motivation, look no further than pretty much any Nike ad ever created – but in particular, this one.
Be it on the track, field or in the water; Nike have a legion of superstar athletes representing them from seemingly every sphere of the sporting world – and, in Rafael Nadal, the tennis court is no different.
Nike adverts never fail to encourage budding athletes and couch potatoes alike; one of our undisputed favourites, however, has to be Nadael’s epic, 60-second ‘Rally’ spot.
Simple but effective, it takes one seamless minute to follow Nadal through his Grand Slams and various titles. Aged 16, Nadal starts the rally at the start of his career – and as the underdog.
Beneath his iconic Nike headband, we see Nadal’s even more iconic, steely stare. The referee and crowd of supporters remain constant throughout the clip; eyes transfixed on the ball that zips back and forth.
With every shot of the rally, however, Nadal moves through the years, resulting in a series of mesmerising career highlights.
As one of tennis’ all-time greats, watching how the boy became a man, and how the man then became a legend – all within a 60-second window – is a truly captivating experience. The themes of commitment and hard work echo throughout the ad, climaxing with Rafa’s winning shot at the 2017 U.S. Open – the 16th Slam of his career.
At the start of his career, many believed Nadal to be a one-hit-wonder; just another youngster who wouldn’t stand the test of time. Often criticised for his non-stop, physical style of play, many believed that he’d eventually exhaust his body and, consequently, his career.
Many believed that he’d simply fade away. But how wrong they were.
Because, even though crazy dreams do take crazy effort, when you’re as dedicated, passionate and naturally talented as Nadal – it’s merely inevitable that those dreams will become a reality.
