Comfort zones – we all have them. We all feel safe in them and nervous when we need to leave them. And I was no different.
When I was younger, I was quite shy. Confident in front my friends and family but shy when it came to stepping away from things I wasn’t familiar with and it began to really annoy me, so I changed. Over the years I began seeing that by not pushing yourself in the direction you want to be heading, you will always stay in that zone of cotton wool and protection. But where’s the fun in that, right?
Starting at S3 Advertising was, for me, a step out of my comfort zone. I had previously worked in management roles, but not in advertising. I knew what advertising was and how it did great things for companies, pushed them to be front runners and make them stand out from the crowd.
But then I suppose any bystander on the street who sees a billboard on their way to work, whilst listening to the radio through their headphones and hearing an advert in between the music would think the same; an advert is trying to tell you something. But what I see now is the explosive minds that create and plan such adverts.
To say that, for me, it has been a learning curve would be a huge understatement. It has become a new way of living. The way I read magazines has changed, I read the adverts with a view of “does it work for that company?”. I no longer skip through a TV advert, instead I listen and watch whilst my mind is thinking of the background behind it all, the thought process of the branding, is the business getting a return for the time of day that advert is being aired and are the right people seeing that billboard.
I’ve also learnt that so many companies have comfort zones. Companies are often too afraid to move away from what their consumers know of them. But in this ever-changing world, companies need to be daring. To get a return on your investments, you need to be open minded to the change.
Be different, be noticed and BE BOLD! We invite clients to join us with those words as the S3 approach.
After all, it is what has helped S3 succeed in being number one in Wales. When you walk in through the doors of the S3 office, you are met by the words “Be Bold”. These words are what I see every day and I say them to myself when I read them. Be Bold in work and Be Bold in life.
S3 Advertising is bold and we want to stand out from the crowd. Sorry, to correct myself there, we DO stand out from the crowd because we don’t have a comfort zone. We don’t want clients to have a comfort zone, and if they do, well we want to change that for them.
I realised quickly that I wouldn’t understand advertising if I was in any sort of comfort zone. I work each day with people who push their personal boundaries and look to meet client expectations beyond what the client would ever have expected. To be part of a team of such driven people is enough for me to never want to be in a comfort zone again.
Advertising is taking over, and as the author Mark Twain once said: “Many a small thing has been made large by the right kind of advertising”.
That is exactly what S3 aims to do for its clients. If something is good, we will make it better.
