From Cardiff City FC to Glamorgan CCC, Mr. Tom to Brecon Carreg, S3’s creative department are constantly producing work for a variety of high-profile clients and brands.
Our creative team are the best in the business, which is why we’ve asked them to share their sagelike wisdom with the following top 10 tips for aspiring creatives. We don’t half spoil you lot…
#1 – The Notebook
Invest in a good notebook. Why? Because you’re going to need somewhere to write down those genius ideas that randomly pop into your head at 2am.
#2 – Scamp & Chips
While you’re at it, buy a decent sized, high-quality sketchbook. Don’t throw any of your sketches away, either; the ones you do that don’t work for one client may well work for another.
#3 – Pinterest Is Of Interest
From inspiration to creating mood boards, Pinterest is any self-respecting creative’s weapon of choice.
#4 – Due Process
Try to put a structure to your working process. Pull together all of your steps and aim to follow that pattern for each project.
#5 – Brief Encounters
Once you’ve received a brief, read it from start to finish… three times. Create a spider diagram, picking out all the key points from the brief i.e. the brand’s market positioning, current and target demographic and key business goals.
#6 – Problem Solver
Always focus on identifying your client’s problems and how you can solve them with your design.
#7 – Do Your Homework
Research is key. Great concepts and creative stem from great research. Conduct research on the industry itself, its history and competitors.
#8 – Create, Don’t Imitate
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery? Not when it comes to design and creative. Take inspiration from others, just don’t take their ideas; it’s a lazy solution that will result in uninspiring creative.
#9 – First Impressions Count
Use your creativity to think outside the box, designing an original, killer CV to grab a potential employer’s attention.
#10 – Find Your ‘Creative’ Place
This doesn’t necessarily work for everyone, but try to identify a location – a park, a balcony, anywhere – where your mind is free to wander and think clearly and creatively. You’ll be surprised at how many great concepts can come to fruition this way.
