This week we have seen again in the news that people are being overcharged for their energy bills. Did you know that you can save over £160 a year by switching provider? Then why is it people are still paying more for their energy?
Surely it makes sense that if there is a saving to be made you would take your business away from your current provider and transfer it to a new provider. This has recently been found not to be the case.
Following interviews with members of the public it was discovered that there is a reluctance to switch provider. The one common denominator was fear; people are afraid to leave the comfort of their current provider for the unknown of a new one – BETTER THE DEVIL YOU KNOW? Well, maybe not.
The same could be said for clients’ relationships with their advertising agencies. You may have stayed with your current agency for a long time because they do a good job and you feel comfortable with them.
If they do a good job, why are they not doing an excellent job? Most people would agree that they are open to hearing new ideas and that they would look for the best service and value, but when it comes to the reality of implementing something as significant as a move in agencies, few marketers are brave enough to make the jump.
This is completely understandable; after all, not many people like change and unfamiliarity. It makes them uncomfortable.
There is also a phenomenon known as ‘catastrophic thinking’ which influences our decision-making process and we as human beings are great at it. It is the process of mentally progressing to the worst case scenario: “If I move to a new agency and do something that I’ve never done before will it have a detrimental impact on my business?.
It’s then my responsibility and I’ll get the blame, I may even get fired. I won’t be able to pay my bills, I won’t be able to provide for my family/pay the mortgage and we’ll be out on the streets”.
This will not happen. The worst thing you can do is nothing at all.
